 How to Make Ventakkai  and Takkali Pachadi

Ventakkai and Takkali pachdi is one of the south tamilnadu traditional recipe. Especially in tirunelveli dish.  You can see this recipe in all function lunch menu. Serve this Pachadi with rice and sambar.

Ingredients:

100 gram Ladies finger(Ventakkai), Finely chopped             
2 Tomato, Finely chopped
½ tsp turmeric
1 tblsp Chilly Powder
1/4 lemon size tamarind 
1 tblsp Cooking oil
Salt to taste

For Grinding
12 Sambar shallots, Peeled
½  Cup Grated Coconut
1 tsp Cumin seeds
4 Garlic, Peeled

For Tempering:

1 tblsp Cooking oil
1 tbl Mustard seeds
1 Sprig Curry leaves

Preparation:

1.      Transfer coconut,cumin seeds and garlic to the blender. Grind it as smooth paste and keep aside
2.     Grind sambar shallots separately as smooth paste and keep aside
3.     Soak tamarind in hot water for 15 to 20  minutes. Extract the tamarind pulp and keep aside

Method:

1.       Heat a pan, add 1 tblsp oil and add chopped ventakkai, Fry for a minutes. Then add 1   cup of water and close the lid let it cook for 5 minutes
2.      Add tomato, mix well. Let it cook till the vegetables cooks half
3.      Add turmeric powder and chilly powder and mix well
4.      Add grinded sambar shallots , coconut paste and Tamarind pulp. Then mix well
5.      Let them cook till the grinded paste raw smell disappear
6.      Meanwhile heat a pan, add 1 tblsp oil and mustard seeds
7.      When mustard seeds crackle add curry leaves.
8.     Pour the tempering over the pachadi and mix well
9.      Serve the ventakkai thakkali pachadi with rice.

Step by Step Pictorial instructions:

My notes:

This recipe we can do using various ingredients such as below
1.       You can use onion instead of sambar shallots. But if you are using onion, you can add the onion before add ventakkai. no need to grind the onion.
2.      You can use green chilies instead of chilly powder.
